Contending for the Faith

Reading in Jude, “Beloved, while I was very diligent to write to you concerning our common salvation, I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints.”

In the first years of the faith, we call them the “obnoxious” years, I had asked the Pastor what faith Jude was referring to. It was a difficult question at the time considering we were living on a steady diet of Mark 11:24, speaking to mountains and commanding material blessing to come; in was the deception of the hour. Truly ALL things were possible however the faith obtained in those days was in our own ability to perform the rituals and not so much in a loving God of Mercy. The question was simple and the answer given, also simple.

What happened to that faith?

Certain men crept in unnoticed who turned the grace of our God into lewdness. Seriously, Jude, Lewdness? (lewd) lascivious: driven by lust; preoccupied with or exhibiting lustful desires. The word “lewd” is Saxon, and means properly “ignorant,” “unlearned”. Having all the right words along with the attentions of mainstream faith movements they really didn’t creep, they showed up in private jets requesting limousines at the airport and first class hotels. Faith became a license to obtain all the worldly desires available at the expense of others.

They “deny” the only Lord God and our Lord Jesus Christ” takes on new meaning by taking faith in His Name to heightened levels of incantations and witch crafts calling forth houses, cars, furniture and dream vacations they wield the sword of a Holy Name for personal materialistic gains. These men, taking the grace and mercies of the faith, turn them into affections of the flesh. Over the years some of the verbiage heard both in the pulpit and in private closed door meetings after included statements like, “you are white trailer trash if you don’t have faith to..” and “you can’t tell them they are righteous or they will sin all the more”.

Not what Jude was taking about you say? Verse 11, “For they have…run greedily in the error of Balaam for profit”. Define error. Wandering. When you wander a path is not specifically defined but rather you flow with what is in front of you. Slowly, step by step people are lead astray through lusts as the trap is set. Once you are fully in its grasp, greed that is, you look around and wonder why YOU don’t have any faith and why YOU failed so miserably. Misplaced faith is always deception. Faith is always in Him and what He has done not in your own abilities, confessions or long prayers. The real kicker is…we are the last one to realize we are stuck in this trap therefore refusing to struggle out (putting down the flesh and it’s desires).

Are you stuck in this trap and fallen away from the common salvation of grace? Naw..not you.

Lord we pray right now in the Mighty Name of Jesus, in whom we DO have FAITH, that the eyes of our brethren would be opened. Realizing the wonders of you grace and the extent of Your mercies. That they would turn their hearts toward you in true repentance of materialism. That they would “sell all” and follow You. Lord we know that your judgments bring mercy and justice at the same time. Cause these to fall on THE ROCK before it falls on them. Amen.
